Nogoa Mackenzie Water Supply Scheme

After one of the most devastating floods recorded in the Central Queensland region, communities, agriculture and industry are slowly recovering from the extensive damage caused.
Many acres of prime floodplain have been scoured, with expensive infrastructure inundated or completely lost and several mines experiencing extended loss of production, reduced stockpiles and need for “dewatering”.
As expected, very little temporary allocation was traded during the water year, especially after the flood events; however, several small trades from $30-$60 did eventuate.
Now that we are in a new water year we have been pleasantly surprised to discover that SunWater had allowed a carry over of unused allocation. With that in mind, be aware that due to the almost full level at Fairbairn Dam, the market will be conscious of the two distinct water types: carryover allocation and current announced allocation.
We anticipate a “hand to mouth” demand scenario in August/September with irrigators sourcing carryover at a lower rate (based on risk) to cover pre-watering. We expect that market to be in the $20-$30 range. However, with buoyant cotton prices, near full areas will be planted and demand should increase as hot weather ramps up in October/November/December. If a rainfall event does create spill at Fairbairn Dam then it may be that current announced allocation will move upwards in price, given the large area planted.
